Love, Yoga, and Awakening - Chapter 1 - Water
One / Water
Maria my love
I trust this letter finds you well. Please forgive my lack of frequent communication. We have been through so much together, so I hope you do not view this as a sign of the deterioration of our friendship. Ever since our discovery of each other, I have had a strong yearning to set down on paper some of the realizations that have congealed for me from our meeting. I cannot think of a better person to address these communications to than you, Maria. These letters will eventually pass from our hands into the hands of others. I trust you will not mind this widening of our converse. You and I both know what a great need there is to give witness to the working of God in our lives. So many are hungry Maria, sometimes it beggars me completely and I do not even know where to begin. If it were not for the constantly renewed surge of faith that often rises within me, I think I would completely despair.
I am very pleased that there are more and more texts offering satisfactory guidance to our souls’ journeys, even though some of this guidance is less than complete. There is a real need for discernment among those who are seeking. But then, we are all giving the best we can manage in this environment, of witness to God’s love and unceasing mercy. I believe when we witness from this intent, then somewhere down the road, the light of the One will turn our missteps into beatifications, occasions of growth that will restore us to the path of right. Still, if we can manage it, it would be much better to not make mistakes that could mislead others. So, with that in mind and as I begin these letters, I offer this prayer:
Light of truth, Source of life
The One to whom we are all beholden
Hear my prayer
It is You we seek, You we desire
We seek to know you and be known by you
Lead us to yourself, for we feel lost
And yet, you are so close to us
Our breath would uncover you
In the centre of our hearts
Let your light be planted on Earth
Our mother in Creation
May this light, a witness to yourself
Never be quenched or dimmed
May all who seek you never be lost
Restore all who stumble and fall
Instil in them a sense of home again
Home that can only be found in you
Through these words I offer myself
To be a vessel for your truth
Keep my thoughts in truth and light
And in the wisdom you would reveal
And have revealed in this place, at this time
Guard, keep, and enfold me
May only what is good and helpful
Come from this work, and when I falter
May your Spirit direct me
To what is true and right
With these and other unspoken thoughts
I pray Dear Father-Mother God
Maria, the world has surely changed. Our work is much more nuanced than it was before. The vivacious moments of creativity and originality I have had to embrace have so surprised me, and at times, caused me sheer disconcertion. But, like we always say, the work must be done in the garden and nowhere else. Elsewhere we pray, we intercede. But here we work, and we have to do so in a manner that is effective for the conditions that confront us.
What is facing us at the moment is the concentration and condensation of ideas, cultures, myths, philosophies, and hopes, into an arena that is now too small to comfortably accommodate them all. The jockeying, pushing, and shoving for positions has already begun. The need for common visioning has become quite needful. We cannot afford, for much longer, to hold on to our truths without seeing how those claims to truth impact others and how, in turn, another’s claim to truth impacts us. Truth is One—so simple, and yet so fraught with argument, interjection, exclusion, separation, and saddest of all, violence. Before our discord spills over, perhaps we can speak to what matters to every one of us, and agree on what would allow the best conjoining of our humanity to the transition the Earth seems to be heading toward.
The time when we could remain isolated, unaffected, and unchallenged by others in our spiritual quest is quickly coming to an end. So now, how do I continue my journey and value my path while recognizing my neighbour’s journey which is as sacred as mine, even though its character, form, or even understanding, may be different? Is there a way in which we can all travel the one common journey of our mother Earth and do so without violence and the desire to obliterate those who do not see as we do, their nature and state as children of God?
Perhaps if we hold on to what is true and important for all of us, we can begin to discern the common bond that ties our lives. My sense is it will be the simple truths that will prove the most valuable and cherished statements of our nature as human beings. It will be our realization and enactment of the intrinsic state of every human being as a loved and cherished child of God. It will be telling the truth as openly and honestly as we know it to be within ourselves. It will be equal valuation and shared access to the resources our mother Earth so graciously continues to supply for our needs.
Maria, you know very well how much I treasure images that clarify and elucidate. Consider, for example, an image of a bucket of dirty water that needs to become a bucket of clean water. How to do it? We could simply dump all the dirty water and pour clean water into the bucket. But assume one of the conditions of the exercise is to always keep water in the bucket. What to do then? Well, we could have a supply of clean water and constantly pour it into the dirty water until the water in the bucket becomes clean. This can be done quickly or slowly. The more quickly we pour the clean water into the bucket, the more violently it will stir up all the muck in the dirty water, disturbing everything in it. The more slowly and gently we do it, the more gradual the transition and the more undisturbed the conditions in the bucket, but with a definite certainty as to the end—clean water in the bucket!
Many situations as they exist on Earth are like this scenario. Among all the various changes that need to be made, the economic distribution system is probably one that will need the gentlest of transitions. The economic systems of distribution that have evolved upon Earth are very fragile and glaringly inequitable, only those they privilege seem blind to this. How to correct these inequities, I think, is one of the most pressing issues we will have to deal with. It is something that will need to be handled with care, and given as much leeway as we can, while we simultaneously endeavour to make the necessary transitions towards equity. There are other situations that will need similar transitions. So we must be patient.
What we cannot do however, is nothing. We must pour clean water upon the Earth. That is why I am here—along with so many others—to be channels for the pouring of water upon mother Earth. The water is there, Maria. What pure, clean, unceasing water God supplies us with! The question is, are we willing to only be channels, to not hold onto the water as something gained and owned, but rather as something that is on a journey from God to Creation? The transitions we need will occur when we have become channels of love between Father God and Mother God. We receive this love only to give it away. We let it pass through us like a river, letting be what needs to be.
My dear Maria, I cherish very much your quiet spirit, which knows so fully of love and the nature of love’s unfolding journey. My path is a path of words. It is a hazardous path I fear. But I am only a vessel, an instrument in the Spirit’s hands. As long as I continue to draw breath in this place, I will continue to avail myself to what I can only be—a channel of God’s love.
Dare I say it? I miss you so much, but we always knew what this would entail. In the meantime, I yield to you the sweet scent of God’s love which we so desperately cannot do without.
Yours in faith, hope, and love.
