Love, Yoga, and Awakening - Chapter 2 - Truth

Two / Truth

Sweet Maria

Are you well? Time keeps unfolding and the things we need to do keep coming at us—sometimes it seems with no respite. I had meant to write you earlier, but could not find the opening. I know sometimes I have a tendency to rush things and to forget that life moves at its own unperturbed pace. ‘Change at the pace of life,’ someone once said to me. All things, it now seems, need to be done at this same pace.

Our world is moving very quickly toward some common and unknown nexus. This nexus concerns the one life we call Earth. It encompasses all life that expresses on Earth, and includes us human beings who have the strange habit of viewing ourselves as existing outside the common ground of life. As human beings, we tend to overlook that we too are creatures in this great reticulation of beings we call Creation. Since our terminus and the terminus of all life is common, we need to work together to sustain this one life we all share. We have to live in such a way that even when we disagree, such disagreement is only to clarify and strengthen what we value and are not willing to do without in our common life. We must be patient Maria, and tolerant too. All life has a stake in what will come to be. I think if we stick to simple truths, try to build and live our lives around them, we will have gone a long way on our intended journey.

The days when we could go across the universe without consideration of the common tie that binds all things to itself are long gone. I hope we have learned our lesson too, Maria. I laugh now, because it had been staring us in the face all along. It is a sad truth that we only come to appreciate our most cherished gifts when we no longer have them. But, we are coming full circle, grateful that God has let us try again, pick up what we had missed and hitch it to our most beautiful and hopeful dreams. It is only then we can say to God: This is the most beautiful and cherished gift we have found in all of your Creation, this is our chosen dwelling.

Love is my chosen dwelling, Maria. There are moments when I have felt that the spirit of life we call Earth is also searching for her dwelling. I think we are being invited to submit our choice so she can put the weight of her purpose behind the most cherished, hoped for, and attainable destiny for all of us. Life has a unique way of knowing itself better than anyone else can. We have to live our cherished hopes, Maria. That is the only kind of choosing life can use. Talking, thinking, dreaming, do have their place, but in order for our hopes to be realized, we have to live them.

Maria, there is no distance, no time, no space, to love’s purpose. I see you now as I saw you then, and as I will see you again, when life’s circle has turned and reached the point of my departure. In the meantime, I have embraced the peculiar patience necessary for living life. I am finding my own rhythms, cherishing those that go into syncopative harmony with my life. It is a very creative process, I am finding out.

There is so much that can be done, beautifully, and creatively. It is a wonder to me—why did I not notice it before? I think I was too busy rejecting instead of embracing. When we are busy rejecting, we do not have the time to embrace what we love. It is only by embracing what we cherish that we become who we are. Love, it is a very strange thing my dear. We either go with its flow or we drown. Easier said than done, I know, especially when we are unsure where love is taking us. In the end, only God, who is love, can keep us, save us, ready us, for love’s final and full onslaught.

We all carry a luminous piece of what we call heaven within us. This hidden treasure must be uncovered in life, then sown and cultivated. When the time comes for us to disappear to wherever we disappear to, we will have given all we can to say, this is what truly matters to us. It is this kind of choosing that counts in the unfoldment of our being. When we choose well, life itself affirms our choice and destiny. As we come to God, our coming is a way of saying this is how we have chosen to know you within Creation.

The common destiny of our lives’ existence requires a language, Maria. There is a language of lovers, a language of friends, a language of children, a language of the wise, a language of the ancients. In order to accomplish what we need to accomplish in life’s journey, and to realize its conjoined destiny, we need a language that represents more accurately, the nature of existence. We need to find ways of speaking that are truthful about the nature of reality. Hiding things, manipulating, deceiving—all these will only make our journey more difficult and more painful. I realize this is a departure from the methods we have used before. For a long time, we have couched our language in symbols, images, and many other figurations, all designed to guard what we considered of too profound a nature to be freely spoken of. We are here now, sitting in the dross of our own making.

I am sorry, Maria, if you do not agree, but many of us, including myself, have something to do with the situation we now find ourselves in. In our desire to make truth accessible, we simplified it, with the hope that it would be more easily assimilated. Well it got assimilated, but now Maria, it breaks my heart that these simplified truths have become so intractable in their claim to being the whole truth. Excuse the imagery, but how do you speak to someone who has a grade two education but who thinks grade two is the be-and-end-all of all schooling?

Our mother Earth, who so desperately needs us to think clearly and honestly, is having the most difficult time with those of her children who no longer value learning, not even from her. I am open to suggestions, Maria. What should we do other than continue to speak truth in ways that people can actually hear? Perhaps there is hope for those who are young because they seem to grasp more clearly the focal points of our common being—dignity, worth, value, respect. But we must do more. We must unravel this tangled morass that exists upon Earth and that we call Teaching. Perhaps I am being too harsh, looking at the contexts and situations of the past through twenty-first century eyes. But what is, is what is. It will not do to try and pretend it is something else.

For those who, for whatever reason, begin to search among the esoteric or hidden spheres of Earth teachings, there is a great cause for worry. Here, they are exposed to an arsenal of coded symbols, most of which derive significance only because they are considered secret. To dwell too long in this smoky hall of shadowy teachings is quite hazardous. Those who eventually come out, invariably find that it is the simple truths they had been offered at the beginning of their journey that are of the greatest import. Truths like respecting oneself and others, treating others with dignity, speaking honestly and truthfully, not only to others, but also to oneself. These are lessons we all learn and re-learn. What I am wondering is why we learn in such a terrible fashion, or is it just me?

I have a suggestion, Maria. How about if we scrub that musty hall of hidden teachings? That is, forget about how esoteric such teachings are. If the teaching is not liveable or viable for life on Earth, it is not worth jack, or is it jarcq? We may do all we can to fill our heads with ‘secret knowledge,’ ‘hidden wisdom,’ ‘coded alphabets,’ and ‘numerology,’ but if it is not transferable to the real living conditions of Earth, such teachings might as well stay hidden or become truly lost. What I am saying is we have to go with what has attested itself as being capable of nourishing the life we are seeking—life that grows into God while remaining rooted to Earth as ground.

The time for esoterica is long past, I think. I have heard it said that esoteric teachings were a way of keeping the knowledge we would need for days like these so the processes of our awakening could gain greater impetus when we needed them. It could be true. If it is, perhaps we have a task to accomplish—translate these depositories of ancient knowledge into useable, liveable, and need I add, understandable forms of teaching. Such translation is not complete until we have started to live what the teachings are endeavouring to show. You know this very well, Maria, all we do has to be done as part and parcel of the rhythm of life. In our endeavour to live truth, we must do so in a manner that continues to display that we consider life a cherished gift, God’s most abundant and lavish generosity to us.

Even as we are searching for a truer language, ironically, such language is already available. The problem is we tend to bend it and twist it and at times abuse it. We have been doing it for so long, we are hardly able to hear ourselves speak. When we finally hear, our hearts begin to speak with clarity and singularity of voice. It is this that life seems to be wanting from us, not just as individuals, but as a community of living, breathing beings, who happen to be human, in this enclave of Creation we call Earth. Perhaps down the road our cherished truths will be further refined toward something more lucid and penetrating. This will not happen until we have clarified, to the greatest extent we can, what is meaningful, purposeful, and indispensable for our humanity and for our journey towards God, the source of our beginning and the terminus of our destiny.

We are on a journey, Maria. I will speak to you of my hopes, truths, dreams, and thoughts, concerning this journey. I will try and use a language that will hopefully be of use to both of us. I think that together, in the space that exists between you and me, we can craft a language that embraces without losing meaning. I have an inkling though, that things are clearer where you are, so forgive me if my clarifications are somewhat fuzzy. It is the best I could envision and thought to be needful in this place.

My thoughts are always of you. Forgive me this indulgence, but it has a way of warming the heart, and bringing clarity to my days and endeavours towards our mother Earth’s continuing and unfolding dream.

All of my love.
